Ideas on Sustainability

This was something that I wrote down in my little notebook a while back about things I might start to change in my lifestyle and behavior:

* Veganism- I have decided to transition to an animal-free diet. I am a little disappointed in my progress so far, but I’ll be patient. Cowspiracy and Food Inc has played a big role in this decision, as well as some key people in my life.

* Human waste- why do we let it all collect in the oceans? We use animal waste as compost, and even if it’s repulsive at first to us (or potentially toxic), I’m sure we can find a safe and efficient way to compost with human waste. This can be both large scale and on an individual home basis. JP showed me a machine that does just this (funded by Bill Gates!) I’d love to see more of this.

* Backyard gardens- an awesome way to connect with your housemates or family, whoever you live with. Such a cute community thing and amazing for sustainability! I honestly have no clue how to grow plants, but I hope I can get the ball rolling on this. It must be so much more satisfying to eat foods that you worked hard to grow.

* Local farmers markets- while becoming vegan is a great way to not contribute to the awful effects of mass animal agriculture, the horrors of industrial agriculture (both plant and animal) can still exist in a vegan diet. I think that scale really matters, if we can go back to relying on local farms for our produce, the need for huge industrial farms that destroy ecosystems and create a monoculture crop system can be made obsolete. I’m sure there’s a lot of things to investigate with farmers markets though- if they really do work in a sustainable way (I have some doubts).

* “Ugly” produce- I saw a video about how France a section in the produce aisle for ugly and misshapen fruits and vegetables. The idea is that we value the look of a food, not its inherent nutritional value or ripeness. Ugly can be just as good!

* Shampoo, conditioner, and other hygiene products (Probably applies to products like detergent as well)- These products are literally all chemicals, and we wash a whole bunch of it down the drains everyday. Shampoo companies market so hardcore that we are brainwashed into thinking that we need to shampoo our hair everyday to keep clean. In reality, the products are just stripping our hair of natural, healthy oils, and kicking our balance out of whack. On top of the personal issues, these chemicals are probably all dumped into the ocean and polluting our world. I’ve been trying to shampoo as little as I can, but it does get hard when I have taiko or interviews.

* Clothes- I’ve always hated the idea of wasting things, especially clothes. The idea of throwing good fabric away makes me cringe. There are a lot of non-profits that will take donated clothes and (hopefully) put them to good use. UNIQLO also takes used UNIQLO clothes to remake into new clothes, I think. H&M also has an awesome project where they will take any fabric to close the fabric cycle of clothing production, so that there isn’t any fabric that is just thrown away. Also, I might try to start shopping at secondhand stores more, or maybe trying my hand at sewing? (Like Kris Bergstrom, hehe)

* Last but not least, the menstrual cup- I admit, I was pretty grossed out by the idea when I first heard it. But if I think about it, throwing out pads and tampons all the time is so wasteful.

This ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would be, but I’m sure that there are so many other ways to be sustainable and environmentally conscious, as individuals and as communities. Oh! Biking! I want to bike a whole lot more and drive a whole lot less. I guess transportation is a pretty obvious one when it comes to environmentalism, though.
